How do I automate gates?
In this guide, we are going to show you the best steps when thinking of automating a set of existing gates or thinking of getting a new automated gate solution for your home.
Step 1: Am I going to do this myself? or hire a professional?
We would most certainly recommend you use one of our Reputable installers when considering automation for your new or existing Aluminium gate. Although some people can attempt this themselves, please be aware there are mechanical moving parts, electrical work and civils work involved with a host of safety requirements to make this gate legal to operate. So we would strongly advise using an installer that is a part of the DHF or GateSafe accreditation company. This ensures you are installing a solution that will be safe to operate, and will stand the test of time.
Step 2: Do I need Swing Gate motors or Sliding Gate motors?
If you have Swing gates then there are a two options to choose from:
- Underground motors which are the most discreet option (these will require civil works to dig up the driveway for the motor boxes and wiring),
- Above ground motors which include hydraulic arms and articulating arms. These are usually installed to an existing set of gates where civil works may be a problem. They work by mounting on the post/pillar and attaching to the gate in the middle and pulling and pushing an arm to open and close the gates.
If you have Sliding gates then there are a two options to choose from:
- Floor mounted tracked sliding gates. These are usually decided before installation of the gates as the driveway cannot accommodate swing gates due to space or sloping. It works by digging and setting in a concrete slab for the sliding gates to sit on. Then a motor with a gear and teeth sit alongside to feed the gate left to right, or right to left. Please note: the concrete footing usually has to be completely level along the track for the gates to slide most effectively. You can have a very slight gradient but can put unnecessary strain on the motors over time.
- Cantilever sliding gates. This option works by balancing the gate above ground attached on a guide rail through a post. They are usually seen on commercial sites for large sliding gates where heavy lorries will be coming in and out. So a concrete footing will not suffice. A feature of this gate is a counter balanced weight on the rear end of the gate to keep it level throughout its operation.
Step 3: Choosing your Gate automation options
Surprisingly, there are a whole host of gate automation companies available with different levels of warranty, price points, features and benefits. Most of the time, the installer will use a certain company for their automation. If there is a specific feature you would like (example: being able to control your gate from your phone), then the intercom system can usually communicate to the motor in a number of different ways. Please bear in mind there are added costs for adding some of the most up to date features. We personally recommend a Videx System that has a built in SIM card that you can call to open the gate.
